Hi, I'm Lupe and I've created this portfolio site so people can get a more general view of who I am as a person (; Please enjoy!
My mission is centered around serving underrepresented communities and facilitating access to education across different private and public sectors. Recently, I have finished working with Just Ideas, a non-profit organization that seeks to provide college-level education to humans currently in prison in Brooklyn, NY. My passion for criminal justice reform continues to grow and I hope to continue my work in it as I transition to exploring opportunities in cannabis legalization and regulation.
Below you will find some past research I've completed regarding Mexican -U.S. political relations, the commodification of poverty via street food, and a case study on the public debate on the wave of feminicides in Ciudad Juarez.
While my interests and jobs are always changing, I lead everything with the belief that extending your hand to someone in need creates an unstoppable rippling effect of righteousness. In our darkest times, lead with kindness.
...the relationship that remains between emigrants and their home countries is just as
vital and can help further understand questions regarding transnational ties, immigration policies, and the responsibilities of the host country post-migration. As a result, this research proposal is inspired by the question, what propels certain home countries to not only establish transnational communication lines with expatriates but to take an active role in protecting their rights abroad?
Starting in 1991, the number of women being murdered in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico
rose dramatically and began capturing the attention of the international world. What began with a single body being found in 1991 escalated to about 162 known victims of feminicide from 1993-19981. While the number of disappeared and murdered women continued to accumulate, the Mexican authorities reported much lower figures gesturing to a discrepancy between the state
and community.
" I walked off and headed towards the water. It felt like the sand was eating me alive and the sun singed my skin. The water was cold and powerful, but for once I didn’t mind the icyness of the Pacific...
That is when my brain screamed at my body to lunge towards the shore, away from the suffocating waves, but I knew I couldn’t do that. It’d only take a few minutes for the Pacific Ocean inside my lungs to asphyxiate me then."
"As I slowly made my way to the front door, I caught a glimpse of something in my bathroom mirror. Nervously, I inched into my bathroom, touching the surfaces one by one to make sure that I wasn’t dreaming, that this was reality. I grasped the sides of the marble sink and without thinking twice looked directly into the mirror.
It was her.
The girl in my dreams. There she was, looking directly at me. Her skin was porcelain and her dark waves framed her delicate features, while her eyes were dead set on me. They were like steel, and unlike in my dreams, she no longer bled fear. I stood there for a moment, unwilling to accept the fact that the reflection staring back at me wasn’t of my tanned, boyish face."
When I am not working on a project, you can find me playing some League of Legends, sketching, painting, or watering my plants! While I am definitely not good at ANY of those activities (my league stats will show you), a girl can only hope to get better. I am also in the process of finding a new furry friend to add to my family!
